Light Heart Retreat is physically located in Franklin, Maine, though the mailing address and access is through Sullivan. I’ve seen many misleading directions on-line. We give excellent directions to guests upon reservation. However, we do not enjoy lookey-loos, so please do not just drop in. We enjoy our own privacy as much as we respect and protect the privacy of our guests.
LHR is a 4 hour drive on Rte. 95 from the NH/ME border. We’re 20 minutes north of Ellsworth, 30-40 minutes away from Mt. Desert Island (Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park), 30 minutes to Blue Hill, 60 minutes to Bangor, 60 minutes to Machais and 2 hours on Rte. 1 to the Canadian border at Calais or to Campabello Island.
Though just 2 miles from Rte. 1, LHR is secluded, at the end of a dirt road, with the only neighbor being before you arrive here, The Granite Garden Gallery. We are 95% surrounded by old growth forest, yet sit up high on a broad hill that has wonderful light and we enjoy beautiful breezes in the summer.
LHR is an excellent location to do day trips from. Any closer to Mt.Desert and you’ll be in traffic, noise and very high rental rates for a shoebox space. Many of our guests travel back and forth to Acadia and visit Bar Harbor while here and are glad to be able to return to the quiet beauty of Light Heart Retreat. And then others can’t bear to leave here and go out…Have it your way! It’s all good!
If arriving by air after checking out Bangor International Airport, make sure you take a look at the airports in Portland, ME and Manchester, NH , Logan Airport in Boston and we have a small, local airport Bar Harbor Airport (Jet Blue partners with Cape Air here, just 25 minutes to Light Heart Retreat). You’re likely to find better rates and if you’re new to New England you may enjoy the 5 hour drive here from Manchester or Boston. It’s a 3 hour drive from Portland. If you go the coastal route you’ll lengthen the time. You pick up a nice stretch of coastal Rte. 1 after you pass the Augusta exits on 95. It will say for Belfast. There’s little congestion and is mostly rural. You could also pick up Rte. 1 at the Brunswick exit on Rte. 95. If you start the coastal route in Mass. or NH, or southern Maine, you’re in for a very long ride and much of it will be commercial.
